Competition and Arbors in Ocular Dominance

چکیده
Hebbian and competitive Hebbian algorithms are almost ubiquitous in modeling pattern formation in cortical development. We analyse in theoretical detail a particular model (adapted from Piepenbrock & Obermayer, 1999) for the development of Id stripe-like patterns, which places competitive and interactive cortical influences, and free and restricted initial arborisation onto a common footing.

Competition for neurotrophic factors: ocular dominance columns.
Activity-dependent competition between afferents in the primary visual cortex of many mammals is a quintessential feature of neuronal development. From both experimental and theoretical perspectives, understanding the mechanisms underlying competition is a significant challenge. Recent experimental work suggests that geniculocortical afferents might compete for retrograde neurotrophic factors. ...
متن کاملLocal circuits and ocular dominance columns in monkey striate cortex.
The relationships between ocular dominance columns and intrinsic cortical circuitry were examined in brain slices prepared from the striate cortex of macaques. Ocular dominance columns in layer 4C beta were visualized in vitro following anterograde transport of rhodamine injected into the lateral geniculate nucleus in vivo. The axonal and dendritic arborizations of individual layer 4C beta cell...
متن کاملAxonal processes and neural plasticity.I: Ocular dominance columns.
We present two related computational models of ocular dominance column formation. Both address nervous system plasticity in terms of sprouting and retraction of axonal processes rather than changes in synaptic strength implied by synapse-specific Hebbian models. We employ statistical mechanics to simulate changes in the pattern of network connectivity. Our formalism uses the concept of an energ...

After unilateral optic tectum ablation in the goldfish, regenerating optic axons grow into the optic layers of the remaining ipsilateral tectal lobe and regain visual function. The terminal arbors of the foreign fibers are initially diffusely distributed among the resident optic axons, but within two months the axon terminals from each retina are seen to segregate into irregular ocular dominanc...
متن کاملThe Role of Lateral Cortical Competition in Ocular Dominance Development
Lateral competition within a layer of neurons sharpens and localizes the response to an input stimulus. Here, we investigate a model for the activity dependent development of ocular dominance maps which allows to vary the degree of lateral competition. For weak competition, it resembles a correlation-based learning model and for strong competition, it becomes a self-organizing map. Thus, in the...
